How Do You Do Dialec?Shop men's

We're not the only ones with a slight obsession with the Suffolk dialect. Local legend and Suffolk entertainer Charlie Haylock's book Sloightly On Th' Huh!, an affectionate celebration of the rich Suffolk dialect, came out in 2004 and sold more copies than Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and Harry Potter in Waterstone's Ipswich!

Before we relied on Twitter to keep abreast of local news and important announcements, there was the phenomenon that is the Town Crier. Actually, the original anchorman is still in existence and alive and well in Suffolk, using a hand bell to attract people's attention, and shouting "Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!"

WS: What made you decide to become the Town Crier for Southwold?
TC: I used to be in the military and served in the guards. I liked the military
uniform the Town Crier wears and thought, why not?
WS: What sort of announcements do you make?
TC: I advertise different functions, local events and happenings. I can be called
in at any time, so I have to be ready at a moment’s notice.
WS: What’s the best thing about being the Town Crier?
TC: Meeting the community and being amongst the lovely people in the area. It can
get a bit crowded in the summer months, but the people are always accommodating.
