assionate about food & drink, the Cornish culinary folk are fanatical about good, fresh, local produce like sustainable fish and seafood. Their cows are lovingly looked after to bring us the best dairy products, the pasties have Protected Geographical Indication status (!) and you’ll find weekly farmers markets in just about every town.

Nestled in the cliffs of Porthtowan, overlooking the sandy Blue Flag beach (part of the St Agnes designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) lies this charming café. The friendly staff and surfer-vibes make you feel like one of the locals, and the café is famous for its mega breakfasts, tasty paninis and delicious home baked cakes. Ingredients are locally sourced where possible, with burgers made from Cornish beef and apple juice from nearby Healy's cider farm.

This quaint café and shop set in the winding lanes of a pretty port specialises in lobster and crab, caught daily by owner Calum. Famous for their crab sandwiches, Calum and Tracey use local products and are actively involved in the conservation of fish stocks. Calum has his own single-handed slow boat called 'Mary D' which he takes out to catch the crab and lobster every day, so it’s all ethically and sustainably fished.

We quizzed owner and Porthtowan local Heather Jones on beach bums, burgers and bacon sarnies.
WS: What makes the Porthtowan Beach café so special?
HJ: I guess it is all down to the atmosphere; calm, open,
cosy and friendly. People come here and feel right at
home. I’ve even been asked what colour we paint the walls
as visitors find it so calming! (FYI its Niagara Blue in three shades). We also adapt to the seasons, so in summer it’s
doors-open, sandy floors and that surfy feel; in winter it’s
all about storm watching and epic hot chocolates.
WS: What is your best-selling dish?
HJ: Our signature dish is our 'Posh Fish Finger Sandwich', which we serve with lightly toasted Turkish flatbread, homemade tartar sauce and pea puree along with a side of rocket and a wedge of lemon. We’re also known for our hearty bacon sarnies and the halloumi salad, which just looks beautiful on the plate.
WS: What events should people look out for at the café?
HJ: We put on Burger Nights on a Friday (with plenty of veggie burger choices!) offering special selections, Summer Nights during the warmer months with unique menus from different local chefs, plus we hold Pilates classes, film nights and you can hire the café for your own events too. We play surf videos on our big screen for when the waves are flat outside, so you can still get into the spirit of the surf!
WS: What advice would you give to a tourist in the local area?
HJ: My advice to visitors of Porthtowan, and Cornwall in general is simple; Do it “dreckly” (the great Cornish “mañana”). So don’t rush, just smile, relax and unwind - you're on holiday! And of course, open your eyes to the beauty that is all around you.
