HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY LEATHER?

Leather is a high quality, hard-wearing and durable material, which is why we use it for our shoes and some of our accessories. But it also has a significant direct and indirect impact on the environment (from the water and chemicals used in the tanning and dyeing processes, to the land needed to raise livestock) which is one reason why it’s good to extend the life of any leather item you buy for as long as possible. The tips below will help keep your leather looking smart, and working hard, for even longer.

SHAPE AND COLOUR

Take care not to overfill your leather bag as it may lose its form and you could damage the handles. Colour fastness can't be guaranteed on suede or leather accessories or shoes, so avoid contact between them and paler materials, particularly when it’s wet. Even be careful with pale socks. Bags and shoes embellished with beads and sequins are especially delicate (and especially pretty, we know). So take care to avoid snagging and scuffing.

KEEP IT CLEAN

Leave wet leather handbags and shoes to dry naturally, and never use artificial heat. Stuffing your bag with paper will help maintain its shape as it dries. Do the same with shoes or use a shoe tree. Before cleaning, make sure the item is dry and remove any dirt. Due to the fine nature of suede pieces, extra care should be taken. Gentle use of a suede brush will remove most stains.

WET WEATHER

Prevention is better than cure when it comes to suede and leather. Regular use of a protector spray will help provide invisible protection against rain, water and staining. But remember, it’ll help with water resistance but it won’t make something waterproof (that’s where wellies come in). Always test a spray on a small area first and read the label.

SHOE SPECIFICS

On certain styles of shoes, there are 'top pieces' on heels (heel caps) and these are a replaceable component. Don't allow them to wear down as this could result in damaging the rest of the heel. They should be replaced regularly by a reputable cobbler. Leather soles are a natural product and give a premium, luxury finish to a shoe. Sadly they’re porous in wet conditions so to make the soles last longer, it's best not to wear them in the rain or wet conditions. To prolong the life of leather soles, we also recommend that fine half-rubber soles are fitted. This can be done at most cobblers if you ask nicely. We’re joking. However you ask is fine.
