A LARGER BUST

Aim for:

Supportive swimwear. It works wonders for larger busts. Look out for elastic underbust bands and power mesh lining for lift, hold and comfort. Halterneck styles are particularly good as they offer plenty of support in all the right places. Or go for adjustable straps to ensure you get the perfect fit.

Side-step:

Stringy strap bikinis. They do no favours for larger busts as they lack support and don't provide enough coverage to flatter your best bits.

A smaller bust

Aim for:

Prints. You don't have to worry about finding supportive swimwear so go crazy with pattern instead! Smaller busts look lovely in bright, bandeau styles. Opt for twist front shapes and ruffles aplenty to really make the most of a smaller chest. And if you want to give your best bits a boost, a slightly padded halterneck bikini creates a little more definition.

Side-step:

Plain swimwear. A little flourish here and there goes a long way in flattering a smaller bust.

A curvy bottom

Aim for:

Hipster-style bikini briefs. They flatter curvy hips, thighs and bottoms, and provide enough comfort and coverage without compromising on style. Tie-side bikini bottoms and swimsuits are also a flattering swimwear choice for bigger bottoms, as they can be easily adjusted to fit your curves completely. We all know there's nothing worse than tugging at your bottoms for more coverage.

Side-step:

Boy-short styles and ruffles. They cover up your lovely curves and can add unwanted inches to your hips.

A petite bottom

Aim for:

Frills, tie-sides and bright patterns. They all flatter smaller bottoms and you can afford to be cheeky! Patterned swimming costumes look particularly lovely on petite ladies and sporty boy shorts really complement a smaller frame.

Side-step:

Poorly cut swimwear. It can swamp small bottoms and hang in all the wrong places. Instead, opt for high rise or adjustable tie-briefs for a flattering fit.

Curvy figures

Aim for:

One-pieces and flattering tankinis. Ample curves look irresistible in flattering, well-cut swimsuits. Choose one with secret power mesh across the tum to streamline your silhouette, a low back and adjustable straps to completely customise your fit. Patterns and ruching work particularly well on curves, so accentuate your best bits and go for big bright prints.

Side-step:

Shiny, clingy swimwear. Opt for matte patterns in a well-fitting style instead.

Athletic figures

Aim for:

Halter neck tops or triangle bikini tops. With a toned tummy and lean legs, you can get away with wearing thin straps, so embrace tie-bottom briefs and string tops in your swimwear. Halter neck style swimsuits also look lovely on athletic physiques; pick one with frills or patterns to create a really fun beach look.

Side-step:

Plain, straight swimwear. Bright prints in small patterns will add a touch of feminine flair to athletic body shapes.

Now you know what to choose, here's a few quick tips on how to choose it...

5 top tips for buying flattering swimwear

Shop for swimwear ahead of time. If you've got a holiday coming up, being prepared will allow you to try on lots of different styles and find 'the one'.

Only try on swimwear when you're in the mood.

The most flattering swimwear is swimwear that fits. Buy the right size swimwear and make sure it's not cutting into your back, bust or hips.

During a trying-on session, correct your posture and stand up straight.

Forget trends and find something that suits you – you'll be thankful in a year's time when you can pull it out to wear again.

And finally, remember: confidence is contagious, so smile as you step out in your most flattering swimwear look yet!
