THE COSY COWL NECK

With temperatures dropping, our necklines are creeping higher. We’re craving all things cosy and ditching deep Vs and Bardots for crews and polos. Our latest obsession? The cosy cowl neck. Perfect for work, weekends and everything in-between.

WHAT IS A COWL NECK?

It’s an item of clothing that drapes at the neck, often folding just below the collarbone. The style became popular in the ‘30s – picture flowing, full-length satin evening dresses – but these days you’ll find cowl necks bringing a vintage vibe to anything from tunics to knitwear and we can’t get enough of them! Wondering how it differs from a roll neck? A cowl is much looser, draping around the neckline rather than sitting so snug.

HOW TO WEAR A COWL NECK

To roll or not to roll, that is the question. Obviously there’s no right or wrong – go with what feels right for you and your outfit. But as a general rule, the bigger the cowl, the more we like to fold. If there’s not a lot of fabric to play with, just let it hang naturally.

PAIR WITH A PINNY

Pull on a pinafore dress and let the cowl neck drape over the neckline for a perfect autumn/winter outfit. Just pair with tights and your trusty, weather-proof Chelsea boots and you’re good to go – whether you’re heading out for a day in the office or an autumn adventure with the family.

FRENCH TUCK

A simple tuck can go a long way to flatter - especially with chunky, high-neck knits that may otherwise hide your shape. Fold the front of your jumper up under itself, bringing it to waist height, then just tuck into the front of your bottoms for a flattering silhouette. Team with a statement skirt to really revel in the retro. Want to add a necklace?
